Here's one that we have been trying to solve today with no luck so far...

We have a revit project file here in our office that was mistakenly set up by the user as a template file, which the user couldn't open - each time it gave hime the error "file cannot be opened as it is open by another user - try again later" (or words to that effect). So i fixed the template problem by using the template file to start a new project... (so now the .rte file is a .rvt file) but we still can't open the file on that particular PC.

We have tried opening the file on a newer PC and have had spurratic luck. i currently have them open, and I have noticed that this then allows me to open them read-only on the original PC - but I can't re-save it under another name on that PC (although i can re-save on the newer PC).

I have tried turning the fire-wall off, re-booting etc. however still no luck. I have even updated Revit and Windows Vista to the latest versions/updates on the original PC...

One thing we do have that could be part of the issue on the original PC is an error message on boot-up that 'host processes' have stopped working.. i start to get a bit lost here though...

Can anyone offer any advice on what to try next....thanks in advance.

This may work...

1. Open the project through the template method you described

2. Copy the elements using ctrl-c

3. Paste the elements using ctrl-v into a new project

4. Extensive staff training

thanks for your help need4mospd! i agree with your point 4 wholeheartedly - that same staff member used a blue filled region to make it look like his door was glazed in elevation! i coudln't decide if i should laugh or berate this guy...so training is a no brainer...

I'll try doing this today, although we may be having some hardware issues as we had a problem saving an excel file yesterday.

weirdly enough - when that particular PC can't access a file, it's like it's corrupting the file or something, because no-one else can access it after that... until a day or so later... I'm starting to wonder if it's not revit, but more our network configuration. Our support company are leaning the same way.

It really is perplexing so i'd love to hear other's thoughts.
