any ideas on how best to create a security grate family that can be installed over a window opening? ideally the grate pattern could be parametrically sized based on the opening size. is this possible?

I would set up a material that had a grid in which the lines were opaque and the openings were transparent. You woud use a map for this... this would also save rendering time over each grate wire/bar being an actual model piece.

thank you Hiroshi- can you point me toward a Help File or Tutorial that explains how to create a material grid using mapping? I have tried using curtain grids and creating new materials from Settings/Materials; no success yet in creating a material with a pattern of transparent and opaque areas.

ok if you know how to make a material with a map you're half-way there. Now you need an image to map. I would make a jpg image with a black background and a grid of white lines. Load it into a material as a map...
go to your "Image Mapping" dialog box (by clicking "edit" under Image Mapping in the Material Editor dialog box)
Select the "Map" tab and under Masking, choose "color" Select the black area of the image. all of the black areas will turn green (or whatever color you have selected in the lower right box) check the "transparent" box and all of the green areas will show as transparent in your material editor dialog box.
Now all you need to do is modify the map to the orientation, etc you desire.
I hope that helps!

Now I am worried about myself.. can't find the Material Editor dialog box you refer to. All I can find is the materials list on the left and four options on the right (Shading Accurender Surface Pattern, Cut Pattern.) Editing options allow me to select or import patterns. No reference to image mapping. Where am I going wrong? thanks for your help.

on the left, under accurender, click the little arrow on the right
this will take you to the Material Library. From the main menu choose Material/New/Default Grey
Select the Maps tab and under Image Mapping click Add
from there follow my previous instructions...
sorry about that!
