I am trying to import a 3D mesh model and trying to change it into a solid model so I can render materials in the file. Does anyone know how to do this?

Ok, in your project go to "Massing" and create a new mass, give it the name and go to File>import>Cad formats, finish the sketch, you CAN'T create Floors by face because it's a 3d mesh not ACIS solid but you can create curtain system by face...

If this is an autocad file, you can import it into a family. Each layer in cad can be assigned a different material.

Typhoon, your method does not work. I am unable to finish the sketch. WWhub, this file is a .dwg imported from Rhino. While I am able to change the material of the layers once imported into the project the materials are unable to render. I tried a 3rd party autocad plug-in which changes meshes to solids. This did not work either. Any other suggestions?

irev, If you imported it in a family, then the layers are automatically assign a material - you just have to redefine it.

WWhub, I did assign the materials when imported into the family. However, when I imported it into a new project and rendered with sunlighting and sky, the sky shows up and the entire family is just a black object. Any suggestions?

WWhub, I figured it out. This was a no brainer after I created the family and imported the family into a project. What I needed to do is change the view properties to Architectrual (I am using MEP). This seems like it will work great! Thanks

Can anyone please tell me how to change the layers into materials once the mesh is imported in a family? I was able to load the 3d mesh in a family but I have no idea on how to add materials to it. will it show a solid stair once I import it to project? or is it only solid if I render it? thanks you guys

"will it show a solid stair once I import it to project? or is it only solid if I render it?" - Did you try it? Will not work, it's a "Mesh" not a ACIS solid, you must convert that to a SOLID... try it too

Another thing, to convert that Mesh to a Solid use this LISP routine in CAD: "M2S.LSP" (just download from here: http://www.accustudio.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=48&Itemid=58)

Hello, you must to select all objects of CAD file and change them into colour properties, by layer, usually is assigned one colour when you convert a 3d object into CAD. Then wehn you import this file to Revit, you can change the materials of layers, because them are with colour by layer, also if you don't do this you will be unable to change materials of imported files. is very easy...try it.
