In AutoCAD when you render you have the option to choose a jpg for the background. Cand you do that in revit 2009?

basically can I pic a background instead of just using the default?

Yes, but its post processing.  Export out to PNG or TIF format and the background is exported on an alpha channel allowing you to put in a new background in photoshop or gimp.  If you don't have either of these softwares you can do it by capturing the rendering to the project, putting the background on the sheet, then dragging on the rendering.  The alpha channel is activated...
