I know this subject has been talked about over the past couple of years on this forum but... here's what our AHJ is looking for on Life Safety Plans: --4S--4S--4S = 4 hour smoke separation --1--1--1--1 = 1 hour fire separation --2--2--2--2 = 2 hour fire separation --OS--OS--OS = Smoke Compartment --1S--1S--1S = 1 hour smoke separation --2S--2S--2S = 2 hour smoke separation How do I build walls in REVIT Architecture 2009 to depict what the AHJ wants to see? Thanks, Rick De Karske

It is not possible to do this as part of the wall. Common methods are using filters to override the cut pattern and cut linestyle of the desired wall. To achieve what you are after the only way would be to create a linebased detail component with a parameter that enables you to change the text. Unfortunately the limitation of this is it will not automatically change if your wall type changes leaving a possibility for co-ordination issues. Which is why I prefer the filter method...

Thanks for the reply Chris. Being new to the BIM World... is there a tutorial I could use to do what you have siggested? Also... is there someway to get this issue to AutoCAD so it could become a usable feature in future releases? The State AHJ is really pushing a code change to require that all CD's be submitted in REVIT on a disk starting in 2010. This will mean that the Life Safety Drawings will need to be submitted that way also. Thanks again ! Rick

If they are asking for Revit files then I'll imagine they will revise their standards to allow what is actually possible in Revit... This may help: http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=39807

For once mr spot isn't 100% accurate. it is possible to do what you are after. it takes a bit of work but can be done. its a bit of a workaround. see the file that i have uploaded. i will make a vidoe tutorial on how to do this but you will see i have added "1" as the text that i wanted to show. it shows in cut plan and also 3D surface pattern. this was only a quick test that i did so the text isn't great and the spacing isn't great either but with a little bit of work you can achive what you are after.

King, Thanks for the response and file. I'll play with it and see what I can come up with. I'm definitely looking forward to the video clip you talked about making. Rick

Good AFternoon ! Did REVIT Architecture 2011 to anything to address this issue or am I still going to have to draw life safety plans in 2D AutoCD Architecture? Thanks for letting me beat the dead horse... Rick De Karske

The best way to address fire/smoke rated walls is using a course fill pattern, filters and utilizing a view templete. If there is any interest I can upload the .pat files for the fill patterns.

Good JJRB... Could you upload first some views that show these pat files working on nortsh/south, east /west, diagonal and circular walls as well.

Good Afternoon JJRB, Thanks for responding. Please post the .pat files. I'm sure I won't be the only one who will need to make use of them. Also... what method did you use to create the fill patterns? I'm still sort of new to this and have mastered all of the tricks. Thanks ! Rick D.

My last post was a challange for JJRB. We worked some time on using fill patterns but they do not work on all wall orientations and not at all if you have curved walls. So if you think you have a good answer here, I hope so but I doubt it. Still waiting for a posted image that shows hatch patterns working for this. We still use an overlaid line down the middle of the wall on our plan code sheets.
