Hi.  I am just learning how to use Revit and am trying to create a building with semi-complex geometry.  I am using massing to create the form and have run into a little problem.

I would find it much easier to create the mass if I was not restricted to working within a workplane, after some google searching I found all I need to do is dissassociate the mass from workplanes... however when I open the "Edit workplane" window, the "dissassociate" button is greyed out and will not let me dissassociate anything.

The attached image shows the edit workplane window I see.

Does anyone know how to make it possible for me to dissassociate from workplanes?

Try this:

Click on the mass, then click on the EDIT button on the toolbar.  Then click on the mass again.  You should see a symbol like the one shown in the attached picture.  Click it.  This will (should) disassociate the hatch.  HTH
