I have gotten pretty decent creating furniture out of floor and walls, and I can edit a family forever, but how do I really create a piece of furnture from scratch?

Hi and Welcome to Revit World, about your question, it's simple, create them in the right family type, you have you HELP menu when you have doubts about what do you need and also, check this: http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/item?siteID=123112&id=11091739 here, there are the " Families Guide Imperial Families Guide Metric" to help you in the creation of all families in revit, if you read this tutorials i think you don't have any problem at all to create any family in revit...
