Would anyone want to contribute ideas, thoughts, suggestions, or any other "wisdom" towards building the best Revit/3d Max desktop for a budget of about $1500-$2500? I know there are a few older threads on similar topics, but I think that some address "super" configurations, in the range of $10k, which is outside the budget of a freelance designer, while others are rather dated.

What I would like to propose is a configuration that is whithin reach of most people, built for approximately $2000 +/-$500, not including the display.

There are lots of choices depend on what projects you will be doing. A desktop or a Laptop? If you are a freelance arch, you might be bringing your visuals for presentation, then you need a good Laptop that demostrate Revit's agility. Cost around $2.5t to $3.5T. A desktop cost less and easily repairable and upgradable but as you know,  not moveable. 4gigs of RAM. duo core (or quad core) w/ 512MB Vcard, I guess will be fine, $1.5T to 2.5T, easy. If you are going for a particular ROI, remember  the  more you spend on hardware affects your ROI. See http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=8480751. You'll find System Requirements also in the same website to run Revit & 3DMax.

What do you guys think about the followign configuration:

CPU                  Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600                                                                   $185 CPU Cooler      Swiftech H20-220                                                                               $140 Motherboard    DFI Lanparty X38                                                                               $175

RAM                  Patriot Viper 4x 2GB DDR2-800 Model PVS24G6400LLK                     $176

Graphics          2x ASUS Radeon 4850 TOP                                                                 $360 Hard Drives     2x Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500 GB ST3500630AS (1.0 TB total) $140 Sound              Integrated                                                                                          $0 Network           Integrated Gigabit Networking                                                           $0 Case                 CoolerMaster Cosmos 1000                                                                $180 Power              CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W                                                            $130 Optical             LITE-ON 20X DVD±R SATA Model iHAS120-04                                      $24

                         Total Price                                                                                        $1,500

This configuration was chosen by the guys at Tom's Hardware, and I believe it is skewed towards gaming. Do you feel that any of the above components are overkill? Especially the dual graphic cards?

Would Revit take advantage of them?

Those of you who also work in 3ds Max, do you know if this build would be a god choice for the times when one needs to render a scene in 3ds?

Feel free to suggest beter altrnatives...

64 bit... I would get 64 bit if I was building a system today. I have seen some really good benchmarks for large files with 64 bit vista.

Yes, most definitely we will use XP64 or Vista 64. Any comments about the hardware choices?
