TurboSquid.com is opening up its marketplace very soon to accommodate Revit families. We are conducting a survey to determine the best way to arrange the marketplace to be most useful to you.

Survey participants will be eligible for our Beta program, to be launched in a few weeks.

Please click here to participate in the survey. We appreciate your input, and invite you to help us make the TurboSquid Revit marketplace as successful as possible.

.I had a look at the survey. I am not sure if a web site for REVIT families will ever fly with regards to monetary $$ exchange goes ? Has TurboSquid researched this topic thoroughly? There is a fundamental problem with 'selling' revit families. The families travel with the project file .rvt. You can cut and paste any family to your own library (hard drive, server, web) or email it to your friend or post it at www.REVITCITY.com  for free distribution. An even exchange system, as the survey explains, of families may be of some use. But by the time someone learns to make sophisticated families by the Squid standards mentioned in your survey are they going to trade them or just build more themselves?

CAD people by nature are very proprietary, from my 20 years experience. Especially the advanced users. They get paid well to keep it in the family (no pun intended)

There may be a market there but I am not sure.

I think the MEP people could actually appreciate this because content is scarce but by the time Squid gets a decent inventory of families it's probably been exposed to the public already. The manufacturers already give their content away.

Check out http://revitfactory.com/ they have been trying to sell revit content for a while.

Personally I would rather just teach people how to build their own families. That's where it's at. TRAINING !!

Thanks for the input.

As for whether a for-pay marketplace will fly, that's what we're trying to work out. In early surveys, Revit users expressed that they didn't necessarily trust the quality of families they'd get through trade-for-free schemes, but would consider paying a small fee, or trading their own quality families, for other ones.

Setting standards and maintaining quality is going to cost some $$ in the form of manpower, though not necessarily zillions of dollars. So if we can make a few pennies one way or another and use that to pay for quality maintenance, it's possible we will serve the market very well. The question is, what is the best and most sensible way to do this? Which is why the survey.

In early surveys, we went around and around with this, with circular answers: - Why don't you exchange your Revit families with others? Because the quality is too low.- Why don't you fix them up, so you can exchange them? Because the quality of the stuff I would exchange it for, is too low.- Do you ever go to Revit City? No, the quality is iffy.- Where do you go when you can't find families, and don't have time to create them? Revit City.

So, needless to say, there is some room for structure here. Some say this type of marketplace is impossible, but then in the same breath they say it's necessary; others say it's unlikely, but wouldn't it be nice. Everyone has their favorite site that they insist has "already taken care of this," but on further inspection, we find a few things missing.

I'll be happy if this survey does nothing more than clarify exactly what the market needs, so we can work toward a more sensible structure for sharing and obtaining Revit families.

Ok, I concur and will be happy to contribute.
.
You may also want to be putting a focus on the MEP content. It is the most lacking in families out of the box and these are the poeple most likely to trade $$ for good working families in my opinion.
.
MEP familes need a little more intelligence because they talk to the 'system' and each other more so than Architectural families. Structural familes deal with structural analysis aspect.
.
Architectural cabinets and casework families would also fly. This could in fact be a 3rd party all by itself.
.
You should have a look at this site below I just discovered. They seem to have a nice format setup.
.
.
Anything I can do to help, drop me a line.

I've enjoyed reading this discussion and believe that there are valid points by both parties.

in neutral...>>

Most importantly__the ultimate goal is to provide for the market that demands high-quality Revit families.

So the question is: what is the best way to distribute them? Obviously, the best way to distribute..is to freely post them on RevitCity, because of the sites' popularity. However, human beings like to be compensated for expending labor, which is both selfish and somewhat justified. Moreover, businesses do not want to pay their employees to create information and then have that same information be distributed freely over the web.

Individuals and businesses will most always decide to sell the created information to better themselves. However, the precedence of a free exchange is the expectation and is the dominant breed in the market.

The problem with the free exchange is, as noted, found in the quality of the content, but more specifically it is the aesthetic of the content. Furthermore, the content does not generally represent the actual products used in our projects. And_manufacturer's are unwilling to step up to the plate to provide their products for the BIM community, so we must expend our time for the sake of our satisfactions.

Division of labor, will create service sectors that are better equipped to generate the supply and can be found on the aforementioned websites, as well as my own. Such websites will be able to breathe, but only a small portion of the air. The remainder will be sucked up by services that provide quality content for FREE, a hope for society Smile
