I have tried a number of different settings and different Rail types, but having a issue with the Baluster posts not connecting to the under side of the rail (see image attached).

This seems to be happening in all our projects created and/or worked on in Revit Architecture 2009 and Structure 2009.

 Any ideas would be great.

Thanks

It may be that your rail profile was modified and is not at its origin.

Thanks WWHub, Ill have a look at that.

It also happens to all the styles of rail types (guard rail, hand rail etc) so im thinking its something else rather then a profile or family, but im not sure...

If your rail is set correctly, I would check the baluster properties. In the project browser, go to families - railings - then right click the properties of the baluster in question. Is there a height parameter? What is it set at?

When you create parameters for balusters and handrails, you cannot access them through the element properties like component families. Because railings are system families you cannot select the individual properties of loaded profiles or, balusters. You need to go to the project browser and access them through the families drop down. I suspect that your balusters have a height parameter that is set too low for your railing. If not, have you checked the top offset in the type properties of the railing itself?

Thanks mgr2820, It is the baluster, when i change the rail hieght the baluster still stays the same height, iv gone to its properties via the project browser as you said, but there doesnt seem to be a height parameter??I opened the baluster family and found it had a hieght of 750, which was the height they were in my project, but now that iv removed that parameter, the baluster still wont attach its top to the under side of the rail.. it will only go by the height it is in its family

Iv attached a screen shot of both the family and the railing in the project, the circled area was 750, but i changed it to 1000mm then removed the dimension and loaded it into the project and you can see the results.

Is this a baluster downloaded from the web library? I might check to make sure that the extrusion is actually locked to the reference planes that define the height. Also, is your project in metric?

  • You might open a new revit file and check the default railing settings- then compare with what is in the file your having trouble with. There are alot of offsets in the railing type properties, double check this.
  • Is your project in metric? The baluster and project should be using the same units.

Judgung by your screen shot- it seems like the balusters are correct on the stair, but, incorrect on the landing, now.

Are you creating the railing after you've modeled the stair? Perhaps, you need to move the transition where the railing goes from slope to flat? You may have to override the railing from auto detect - to defining it as slope and flat- then adjust the posiition until geometry is correct.

Yep, my project is Metric.

As far as i know it is standard Revit railing?

I will do as you suggest and compare it to a defult project, this may have something to do with it as its from my companys template file, which has been around from before my time working here (2 years) and it may have not liked the move to the lastest revit.

I will post updates when i get a chance to check it all.

 Thanks for the help

Thanks mgr2820, After comparing a Defult revit template to our companys template i found that the railing was working fine in the defult template. Im going to delete all the railing families, profiles etc from our template and reload them and hopefully they work from now on. Thanks for the help!

If you have the baluster family type set to be "Post" then it doesn't attach to rails.  Try turning this option off and then it will automatically attach.

If you open up the baluster family to edit, there's a check box at the top that says "post".

Make sure you use the 'ballaster' family template to create the family or modify and rename an exiting family from the Ballaster folder.

Load it into the project | Insert > Load Family.

It will be filed under the 'Railings' category in the project browser.

It will then be available in your Railing famiy.
