I think I know what I want to accomplish, but I'm not sure how to get there.  Maybe a nested family?

I'll need 2 different schedules: a typical Isolated Footing Schedule (which I already have), and a Geopier schedule.  The Geopier schedule will have the following fields: Mark (ex. GP1), Dead Load, Live Load, Wind Load, Seismic, Design Pressure.

I don't need any Geopier "objects" in the drawings; only a tag.

The Isolated footings need to be tagged like this: F1 / GP3.

Not all F1 footings would have a "GP3" geopier mark.  So, it's an Instance Parameter for each Isolated footing.

However, each "GP3" would have the same values for Dead Load, Live Load, etc.  So, "GP3" is a "Type" in that sense.

So, if feels like I need to create a family for geopiers that really has no graphics in it, but just some type parameters for the different loads.  Then I would load that family into my Isolated footing family and create a tag that would show "F1 / GP3" or "F1 / GP6" . . .

Does that make sense?

You might want to look into creating a schedule key to tie into your Footing Schedule. If you go to http://www.denverrevit.com/?p=6 there is a link to download a .wmv that discusses schedule keys. It starts about 2/3 of the way in, so you can skip the first 15 minutes or so.

Glad that worked out for you. There's some other movies an that site as well, and a new one every month.
