Is there anyway to render an image with a quality better than 300 dpi (presentation)? my renderings look good, but not nearly as realistic as some posted here. thanks!

dpi settings are only part of the equation. You also need to take a look at the radiosity and raytrace settings for the scene. Also, be sure that your view is sized correctly. I have seen people render a view that was 3"x2" at 300 dpi and then wonder why it didn't print correctly at 11"x17". The other thing that makes a difference in rendering is choice of materials and lighting. My theory is that rendering is 50% technical and 50% art form.
