I work for a large Structural Consulting firm.  We are working on a new project where the Architect will be using ArchiCAD.  Our office is well trained in Revit as we have been using it since RST 2.  We have some concerns (mainly because we have  very little experience with ArchiCAD) about the interoperability of these two programs.

The architect is also voicing some concerns over the ability to do clash detection using two different platforms.

1. Does anyone have any experience with using these two programs together?

2. Does ArchiCAD export a file type that can be easily imported both into Revit for our use?

3. Does ArchiCAD import a file type that Revit can export?

4. If yes, can you do clash detection inside ArchiCAD directly? (If not can you import both into Navisworks?)

Thanks

other than IFC, both programs can read and write dwg. i don't know if that is something you can use for your intended purposes.

FYI, Archicad is starting a new campaign with prupose of grabbing a larger share of the U.S. market. So this may be a very commom situation in the near future.

I've heard that exporting to IFC from Revit will cause problems where you have an outside family that you have created repeating in your project.  Apparently these families will not be included in the IFC export.  Does anyone have any information on this?

Thanks again!

Here is my experience. We work in AC12 and our consultants in Revit, Revit MEP and Revit Structure. Our exchange with Revit Structure via IFC has been perfect. With MEP we get everything across clearly but we have had trouble exporting/importing two elements : dynamic grids and dynamic annotations. As far as interface and accessibility goes, AC has a much better interface, explanation and openess to allow you to learn IFC and working with it.. Revit doesnt have such an extensive access mostly because (and i think this is my bias) Autodesk has been too arrogant in thinking everyone will use its programs to actually put time and effort into developing a useable interface for this open source language. Either way through trial and error we have been able to utilize IFC and exchange and coordinate 3d structure and mep models relatively easily. Now if I can learn/figure out how to show dynamic text and grids... Id be really happy
