So I have a model that I've finish but now I need to send it out to the plumbing people so they can add their plumbing to the model... my model is set up with work sets (if that matters) and from what I've been reading it looks like some how I need to link it to them?  I can't find out how exactly to do this but I need to send them a file that they can work on that has my architectural and then I need to get this file back to update my model with their plumbing.

How would I go about doing this? and is there a way to make it so they can't make changes to my architectural part of the model?

 I'm working with RA2009

I tried searching but didn't find enough information.

I don't believe you have the concept completely down.  You would share your model with them but they would build a model of their plumbing which they will then share with you.  If you do everything correctly, it is as easy as just linking in their model.  BUT it is not really that easy ... especially on your first shared project.

Read everything you can related to share/monitor here and on the AUGI Revit site.  I also sugjest that you build a simple model and test the process out so that both offices understand it thourghly.

Ok I have the linking down and it worked perfectly when I tested it out.  Is there anything else I should know about this process?  Any bugs or things I should watch out for?

Linking is the easy part.

One thing to understand is the difference between hosted elements and who owns what.  For instance, if you own the floor because you modeled it, they may not be able to place a plumbing fixture because it is floor hosted unless they copy monitor your floor.  Now that thay have done that, how do they relink your new...improved model?

BIG CAUTION HERE!  Do not delink or delete the linked model.   And you do not want to delete the floor and create a new one.

So then you want to keep saving over the originally linked file as it's being updated?  You don't want to save a different file if your updating and then link to that file?  You always want to update the file thats already been linked?  Correct?

Are there any ways to leave worksets editable or parts of the model editable with linking?

Yes, when you get an updated file, just save sme path name as what you had linked.  And you are correct - you do not want to re-link.  No need to - the link has already been established and the elements with the same ID are still the same.

All worksets in your model are capable of being edited.  You really don't want to edit the linked model because that's up to your consultants.

Ok cool thats what I thought... but people are telling me that they want Revit to allow the user from another discipline to be able to edit the linked file but thats just not possible or supposed to happen right?

They edit their file ... send it to you and you replace it.... and ditto the other way. The linked file is in your office but it's just a detached from central copy of their original.

We are all still looking for ways of having a ....wide.... area network that would allow us to work in the same file but doesn't work yet....

That would be helpful. Well I've tested "linking" out and it seems to be pretty easy... now I just have to put it into action and see what happens with everyone else (Everyone else being MEP and Structural)... Thanks WWHub and everyone else, I'm sure I'll have more questions for you guys soon! Smile

5 Star rating for you guys!

Linked models suck!

I prefer the way of the Uber Model!!

I have seen a few different things done:

1. FTP hosted central files

2. VPN

3. Virtual Machines

I think the FTP hosted central file would be awesome if everyone was able to access upload and download speeds like a T3 or something. Or else you would just have to coordinate save cuz like with VPN when someone of site saves it locks the central file until it's done.

The thing I hate most about links is keynotes, they do not come through the link. It's just an empty symbol.

Yeah, the FTP hosted central file sounds really nice.  Does anyone have any experience with using an FTP hosted central file?  I just want to hear the pros and cons.  Also hows the security between different disciplines (having editable and non-editable worksets, so people can't mess with other peoples work)?
