I'm trying to get a nested window family to work, but I keep getting this error "Can't cut instance of Window out of Wall."  If I insert them separately it will work, but then I have to change the width, height, sill etc all over again.

The nested family is organized this way, I have a wall based family for the exterior precast trim, which would be common to doors, and plain cased exterior openings, which would need to cut it's own opening.  I started up a window family and inserted the trim component into the wall and made my window geometry which has it's own voids to cut back the wall for the jamb.  I associated the dimension parameters from the window to the trim and it flexes nicely.

Thanks

Mike

Hi there, the problem i think and i tested it's you have several voids in the model (one inside the others), you have ONE void in the "precast file" and you have 2 (two) voids in the "window file", if i was you, i create 2 (two) precasts, one with the void to create like "Openings" with that precast around and other with "out the void" and in this way you can use it in other windows and doors. I know you want this to function to don't have to change the dimensions in the model every time you must used but i think in this way you can "insert" this precast in all the windows and door you have and locked to function correctly (waste of time), you spend less time using the precast separately when you need it, in a door or window, after all, you don't use this precast in ALL the projects you have? didn't you?

Hi Typhoon

Thanks for responding.  I tried your suggestion, removing the void from the surround family, and I simplified the geometry but when I insert into a project the window dosn't cut as expected.  (see image and family file)

Thanks

Mike
