Hi -- We are doing a remodel for a client where the existing exterior finish is stucco, and it is going to be replaced with brick veneer.  We would like to be able to show both the before and after views of the building, but we are not sure how to do this.  I have searched the forums without much success.  We have tried to copy the original structure, but we receive an error about "circular chains".  Can we do this using Design Options, or is DO just for portions of a structure?  Or can we do this by creating a dependant view of some kind?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Jim H.

I did something similar to an old CMU Harley dealership. I modeled the original buidling in the existing phase and then i obviously did a demo phase. in the new construction phase i created wall types that where just the new veneer and stuccos to lay over the existing wall. It worked extremely well and I got to keep the existing CMU structure. I have a ton of images of this project on my laptop if you would like to see.

Matthew,

Thanks for your reply.  I would very much like to see some of your images.  Can you e-mail them to me?  Also, how do you create a wall type that is just the exterior finish and be able to lay it over an existing wall?  airspace between core boundaries?

Thanks again for your response; I look forward to hearing from you.

I can send you some Revit images from home tonight, if you look at my uploaded images you will see the finished project. It shows new veneers traced around an existing CMU shell then joined together.

Or you could just demo all your existing walls and replace them with the new setup. There's alot of ways to approach this.

Hey Matthew,

I checked out your uploaded images on the site, and they look pretty good; but I'm still not figuring out how you did it.  "Demoing" the entire wall isn't an option; we want to be able to show the frame wall still intact with just the stucco finish demoed.  I tried creating two separate walls, but that didn't work the way I thought it would.  I created a frame wall with just sheathing on the outside and GWB on the inside, and then I created an exterior wall with just the stucco, thermal and misc. layers; I eliminated the layers between the core boundaries by moving them.  I thought this was going to work, but I can't seem to apply (for lack of the proper Revit term) the stucco to more than two of the frame walls; on the third wall, it attaches itself to the wall centerline.

Am I heading in the right direction or am I even on the right track with this?

you are on the right track for sure. try this:

1. make a new project with the standard phases.

2. create 3 wall types (Stud wall, Stucco wall, and Brick Veneer wall)

3. draw a square with the stud wall in the existing phase.

4. create your existing stucco wall on the exterior of the stud wall, use pick lines tool to create your stucco and have your loc line at finish face interior.

5. demo your stucco in the demo phase

6. create your brick veneer the same way you created the stucco but in the new construction phase.

I will do this real quick and post the result.

Thanks again, Matthew.  I was unfortunately unable to open the file since I'm using 2008, but I think I've got the gist of what you're saying.  We did a little remodel job in phases the other day, and while I'm no expert, I think I understand it enough to be able to run with it.

Thanks for all your help.  That's what makes this site such an invaluable aid when learning this software.

Thanks again.

Jim
