As the project builds the component list is very hard to sift through. It would be great if it had categories like furniture and plumbing with flyouts under a respective category such as chairs and tables.

I think this is where it is very important that you develop a good naming convention.  The naming needs to be logical and in a manner that self sorts.  You don't want 24x36 desk then have desk 36x72.  You want to build the name documenting what it is.  We also like to include our office initials in the name when an office standard family is used.  Items that are project specific include the project name or initials in the name.

Example:

Desk (Office Initials) 24x36 Single Ped

Desk (this project name) 24x36 Single Ped

The list is in ABC order, so you could put it in categories if you wanted to, by assigning certain naming conventions to organize the plumbing and everything else.

But WWHub's suggestion is the ideal way to do things

I have been messing with the building component manager from bimworld, it's pretty sweet.

I wish project browser has a thumbnail pop-up of views and sheets when you single click them.
