Hi guys. Kind of a long and maybe complicated question - I hope to get my point across.

I'm trying to use Revit 2009 to create some kind of template for early stage planning of large scale projects with multiple buildings. As an alternative to using SketchUp to quickly draw out the volumes I'm using Revit to create masses by 'picking' the lines of a DWG, extruding them to the desired height and then just mass the floors (without actually adding 'real' floors) so as to get all the numbers into a Mass Floors Schedule and get a nice overview of my different buildings, floor areas and volumes.

The key is to put a minimum of time and effort into sketching and get the most out of the resulting data. I've added some fields for stuff such as the name of the block, building denotation, etc via Shared Parameters, put them into 'Identity Data' and they all show up in my schedules. So far so good.

In order to get a better visual outline of the distribution of the project I thought it would be a good idea to define Materials and then map each type of operation to a certain shading color. Residential buildings/floors would be Magenta, Commercial would be Yellow and so on...

The problem is how to get the accompanying identifiers that I defined into the defaults of each material (in the Identy tab) into my Mass Floor Schedules so that I can use them for sorting and grouping.

Sorry for the long post. Hope someone finds interest in this method and would like to help out a newb Smile

The parameter you created will need to be a shared parameter for it to show up in Schedules. Go to File-->Shared Parameters and create one there. Then go to Tools-->Project Parameters and load the shared parameter you made. Make sure you add it to all model categories that apply (i.e. Floors, Walls, Doors, etc...)

Thanks James. I've tried that approach but it doesn't work the way I want it to.

I want to enter default parameters in the Material settings once and then have them follow into my schedules based on what material I give each floor.

As it is now, I see the fields in my schedules but they show up empty whichever way I try applying the material (paint bucket, from the schedule etc). I used a shared parameter to define the material but when I set it via right-click on the mass floor and then element properties, the shading defaults I entered won't show.

The only way to see my materials (this is in the regular 3D View) is to use the paintbucket but then the other shared parameters from the material won't show up in my schedules.

My head's spinning.

Try applying the shared parameter to the material category and then filling it out in the material properties. You could then use a Material Takeoff to represent your schedule.

Thanks again James for bearing with me.

I guess I could investigate that path further but not sure if it'll enable me to do this the way I wanted.

I want shared parameters from the material to show up in my Mass Floor Schedules so that I can just 'paint' floors and thereby giving them certain properties other than just the material and rendering appearance.
