Hi
My name is MANI,im structure eng. student in IRAN.for the past couple of month i was working on revit to see if i could impliment it in company that i work as student, here are the results:
1- Revit needs commandline like autocad in order to work fast we need commandline  instead of menus.
2-Revit acts smooth and good in most of engeneering filed instead of one filed and thats CONNECTIONS.most of people use 2D connecton in revit but i think there must be good and detailed 3D connection familys in revit.i think if there was a way to use AUTOCAD STRUCTURAL DETAILING CONNECTIONS AS REVIT FAMILYS ,it would be great success.i wish  there was a way that i could assign 3D connection familys quickly to the beams and columns end.
3-Revit needs a powerfull structural analysis software beside it ,that has a good link with it.i think one of the best software in this field could be CSI SOFTWARES, like ETABS and SAP2000.REVIT ALSO NEEDS AFOUNDATION ANALYSIS SOFTWARE BESIDE IT LIKE CSI SAFE.
Overall revit is a future software.
Thanks in advance
Mani

Yes you are right.it seems to me that Architectures are making decision for REVIT STRUCTURE.I think they need some experienced structure engineer in their design team.combination of REVIT structure and Autocad structure detailing and a powerful analysis software like SAP2000 would be awesome idea.but the whole BIM idea is great.

Thanks

Mani

First they create Revit Architectural then they create Structural and MEP, i'm not structural Eng. so i can't talk about what is the best program in Struct. to Revit, i have several fiends of mine (Struc. Eng.) and they don't like SAP2000, well, they put ROBOT, some guys like it and some others don't....

my problem is detailing in revit structure.let me tell something, despite we are embargo by UNITED STATES of AMERICA ,we have tekla representative in Iran.because tekla use BIM and it is a powerful structural detailing tool.but personaly i like REVIT and im desperately looking to find a way to use it correctly in our projects.to be honest with u i was unsuccessful until now.

"despite we are embargo by UNITED STATES of AMERICA" - Please, NOT "POLITICS" in this SITE... i'm not GOD for JUDGE anyone (in this case my oppinion i think BOTH have your points IRAN/USA)

"but personaly i like REVIT and im desperately looking to find a way to use it correctly in our projects.to be honest with u i was unsuccessful until now." - Don't surrender, Revit need a constant practicies, so do it, don't loose the faith...

I am not a Structural Engineer but I have been using Revit for 6 years and am an Structural Engineering student at the University of Wyoming.  I just have some input if you dont mind.

1. Revit will probably never see an autocad commandline and to be honest I used to use cad and I am MUCH quciker in revit with its keyboard shortcuts than I am with Cads commandline.  The only difference is that you dont really notice it...Revit alows you to see what you are typing in the bottom for a keyboard shortcut, but it also tells you information about things you hover over, what it is expecting.  Really the bar on the bottom of revit is fairly similar to that in Cad.

2. There are many good detailing packages that work well with Revit...I have yet to get my hands dirty in any of them yet, but Revits detailing capability has grown tremendously since its first release a few years ago.

3. A powerfull structural analysis?  Revit can link to TONS of Analysis packages.   CSC, CSI, Ram, Risa, Robobat, and quite a few others.  Etabs is included in that list...as for SAP2000 that has to be one of the most glitchy programs I have EVER used and it has to be in the top 10 for worst programs ever designed.  Yes it has some very high capabilites especially when looking at seismic, but there are others that are comparable without the issues. Right now Ram is probably the best software that links up with Revit, though Robobat (being and autodesk product) isnt far behind and has many powerful extensions.

I would strongly encourage you to look a bit more into the capabilites of Revit.  The only issue that hasnt really been addressed by Autodesk that you posted is that it lacks an AutoCad like commandline, and I dont really see the plus of having that.  Revit is NOT perfect yet and still has alot of tuning especially in the structural catagory, but compared to AutoCad it is worlds over better.

1: Why does it need a command line? Revit is not Autocad, it never was and never will be. It is used differently, and to try to make it "more like Autocad" is just going to hurt the program.

2: It is possible to do 3D connections in Revit (I am 99% certain you could tie them to the beams so it automaticly uses the right one), but there are sever reasons why it is not done.

     a: Lack of content.

b: It would take quite a bit of time/effort to get it to work intelegently, and it's not something that will work well if you only  go halfway.

     c. Physical restrictions. Decent systems are getting bogged down as it is, modeling all the connections would melt all but the best machines.

3: Revit already works fairly well at linking with the big name analysis programs, and is getting better. Personally, I don't want to see more than very basic analysis built into Revit. It is a modeling program, not an analysis program. If you try to make it do both is going to leave you with a program that does neither very well.
