I've got some reference lines that act different from other reference lines with respect to dimensioning.

I've locked my walls to the reference lines and have dimensioned to the ref lines. In some cases, when I pick the reference line the dimension text highlights enabling the wall to be edited by retyping a new dimension.  great.

I've got some other dimension lines which are also locked to walls. I've also dimensioned to the ref lines in these cases. In this case when I select the reference line the dimension text does not highlight. Obviously, I can't edit the wall length by retyping a dimension length in these cases. Kind of annoying.

Anyone have any ideas why the reference lines behave differently?

I think I've noticed a pattern but, it might be too early to know. It seems like I have issues with the verticle ref lines in a couple of different drawings.  The horizontal ref lines behave properly.

I think you have made a bad choice in using reference lines.  These carry overs from hand drafting are useful sometimes but beware!  I rarely use these because the tendency is to leave them.  If you do use them, delete them as soon as you have the model elements in place.... no reason to keep them any longer.

BTW -  Always ... always ... always pay attention to what you are dimensioning from / to.  It may get turned off / deleted or moved and then your dimension is incorrect.  Model elements should never be dimensioned to reference planes or reference lines.  They don't exist on the project site - do they?

I have had bad experiences with staff dimensioning walls only to find out they had the furniture on temporarily and when they thought it was a wall, it really was a picture!

I've seen some tutorials where they dimensioned to gridlines. The gridlines were locked to walls, floors, and roofs and it looked like a smart way to adjust your building by selecting the gridline and typing over the highlighted dimension text. The entire building updates all at once.

Sounds like you don't subscribe to the method described above.

Not having the foresight down the road to avoid what might be some obvious pitfalls, I've been debating whether or not to use gridlines or reference lines in the way that they had shown in the video.

Does anyone have any additional thoughts?

Grid lines are NOT reference lines!  Grid lines are a traditional way of documenting a project and I do use them and I do pin one grid line in each direction then lock all the other grids to that.

What I am cautioning against is being careless in what you dimension to and most times, reference lines are not necessary.  Why put a reference line in to locate a wall?  Put in the wall!  Duh!
