Not much, i'd like to see that "then it pops up a dialog box asking to open another view instead.", it's seems like you try to insert some component (family) in that view and "HE" tells you "can't view this object in this view, change to another view to see this category"....

What version of Revit are you working? caracteristics of your machine? how many RAM and so one? my guess it's "Out of Memory".... OR (i don't know what version are you working) but did you update to Service Pack3 in 2008 or Web Update to 2009?

we are on subscription. our machines are a little underpowered in both the video and processing aspects, but just recently we started having this come up. I enabled OpenGl by request of the autodesk white papers on technical hardware for revit 2009 but then disabled it after i started getting this error. still getting it now though. our vid cards are underpowered which is my guess at the culprit. Geforce 7900GS 256MB RAM

You don't tell about the RAM and what version are you working, i had this problem too and disable OPENGL and in 2008 i install Service Pack 3 and in 2009 i update SP and my graphics is ATI Radeon 1600 512MB and until now i don't have anymore this issue...

Well, revit it's upgrade to the Web update witch solve many issues, you told you had 4GB RAM an XP, but if XP isn't 64bits you wnat take advage of them, to me it's out of memory, i think (no, i'm sure) there are here in this site some treaths with this issue, try to find them...

I believe if you open a fresh instance of Revit and open that file it will start a new journal file. Navigate to your Revit folder under "Program Files". In the journal folder open the most recent one. You should be able to find in the .txt file it reporting some errors. Copy and paste your error into this thread and see if anyone can isolate the problem.
