I have a client who is refurbishing an 11-stroy hotel/office building.  They've asked us to model the building and perform material takeoffs for price comparisons (floor material/paint/ceiling).  I don't necessarily need to model each floor or wall to show the materials installed, but I do need to find the total floor, wall, and ceiling area for each room.  This is where I run into my dilemma, as I can gather schedules together to show overall areas, but when it comes to separating the schedule to show each room, it seems there is no option to do so.  Granted I can use a "Room Area" schedule as a dummy for floor and ceiling area (additionally separating by level), but the wall surface area seems to have no way of accomplishing this.  I would certainly not want to have to go through a couple hundred rooms to add parameters to each in order to accomplish this if there is a more effective alternative.  Is this possible?

Are floor levels typical? Rooms same per each floor? How could you get an area of something that does not exit? More questions than answers, ha? I suggest you do it in Excel.

What I learned with Revit is that, if it doen't exist in the model there's no mention of it in schedule.

Here's a suggestion, draw a "DOT" as a family, give is room name, room no., room area, anything you might need to associate to it. Bring that "DOT" family to your model. Now you will see that there's an entry in your schedule. Copy as many dots and define them. Do a formula in your schedule to calculate whatever you want to tally. You can be creative, instead of DOT, use a letter or a number.

If this helps, you don't want to show these DOTS to your Client.

Thanks for the reply.  I understand the concept of using a "dummy" reference to trick the schedules, would seem more prudent to just use spreadsheets if it's not going to be parametric anyway.

Actually just ended up modelling each floor as the client was recently interested in doing section cuts of the building.  While I could not use the "Ceiling" or "Floor" or "Wall" schedules to display items "By Room"  I instead am using three separate "Room" schedules and imputing the finishes of all three manually.  Yes it will take some time, but is sensible for rooms which may have varied floor finishes or rooms with dropped soffit ceilings and a center acoustical tile system, of course.

Anyway, adding some currency parameters and calculated values, it is possible to now do cost estimating While I realize that material take-offs can do this with the simple ability of assigning the materials, they wanted it by room/level, so was not apparently possible.
