I'm a recent convert from CAD, and where I work, the building regulations as well as the city planning commission is as anal as you can get.

While I save time (eventually) on sections, elevations and future corrections, I still find myself fiddling with a lot of 2D Revit components.

So basically, what I would like to know is, do you use Revit for 3D modelling only, or do you use it as your main design and work tool?

We now use REVIT for everything.  I don't know what you mean with fiddling with 2d components.  Our details still contain a lot of 2d as they should but they are faster than CAD.

Thanks for the reply.

What I mean is that we still need to color walls, create tags, mask areas in sections and elevations (mostly because the site created doesn't mask the walls behind it), etc.

Do you work in an office where all your work templates are already integrated, or did you have an adjustment period?

I guess what I'm most interested in is how an office adjusts to working with a new tool like Revit.

Masking regions are a nice tool but if you are using a lot of them, you may not be aware of all the tools you have available.

  1. Do you use your linework tool?
  2. Are you aware that in some instances, the linework tool's line is adjustable?
  3. Did you know that (2008+) you can right click on an object and hide it in view or over-ride the properties of items including making them transparent, changing their linewights or turning off their surface patterns?
  4. Do you know how to edit the cut profile of objects?
  5. Do you know how to set up walls so that one or more of their elements is adjutable vertically at the top and bottom when shown cut and that this is a 3D adjustment?
  6. Do you know how do edit the face region of walls and floors so that you can "pour" on a different finish?
  7. Do you know how to create shared parameters so that your tags can be automatic andd not just an annotation?

REVIT has a lot of great tools and after a couple of years, I am still learning new ones but in spite of that, REVIT was faster and more useful from the beginning than CAD.

We created our own templates and we are still tweaking them.  There is an adjustment period.  Our staff still make mistakes ... deleting items, moving items, making poor decesions.  That's why we have continuing ed  but everyone should do that if they want to succeed.

Thanks for the list, I've experimented with most of them, but we are starting from scratch and that requires more time than usual.

It's getting there, and the tools you listed are very helpful, especially the linework tool.

Thank you for your time.
