What does it mean that "an extrusion must be a closed loop"? Seems obvious but the answers are not in the tutorial nor the help desk.

The extrusion must be fully enclosed in a boundry that is defined by linework. Lines must not cross ... no lines can exist other than those that define the boundry.

Sometimes the closed loop does not form even if it is closed. The work around to this is to create a new element similar to the one you are creating and then select the lines of the old one. This worked for me nicely. Hope it helps others who also encountered similar problems.
