I'm new to revit 2009 and have been finding the material updating confusing when using external families in a project. For one, I believe the work flow is over complicated. You can have material assignment with "parameters" for external component, material assigment with external component, material assignment inside the project on the same component. They also don't match up when you load into the project whilst in the family editor. I was playing around with it for hours trying to understand the logic. Is anyone able to explain the pitfalls I'm experiencing, I can't believe others wouldn't find this area problematic. I also noticed other things, like when setting the rendering region, the cursor doesn't appropriately change from a move cursor symbol to a resizing window symbol.
