Hi,

How do I create a generic model in place family with family type.

Also, the model i created  is not seen on plan with the right visibility. It is a new cornice model created in Revit 2009. while in revit 2008, it can be seen correctly.

Hey, in-place families are used for creating one instance of geometry. Because there arent different sizes (width, length, depth etc) within your generic model, they dont have a type. Type refers to the specific attributes of one of the family elements ie Family: Window; Type: 1900x1800mm, 600x1500mm. You'll notice in the type selector various components of the one family, each with varying properties.

I read this info in "Marathon Drafting", so I cant take credit for it.

Rules for In-Place families.

  • Anything that is a specific, one of a kind condition.
  • In-place families are NOT for multiple instances.
  • Are NOT for tagging or scheduling… though it can be done.
  • I use them for reveals, sweeps, walls, openings that are otherwise difficult.  Concrete tilt up const. lends itself to a number of in-place families.
  • Use your 3D view!!  Much quicker..
  • Apply material specs intelligently.  Do not just assign arbitrary materials as you WILL have to come back and change it otherwise.
  • Dissasociate work plane to avoid future errors..

Rules for External families

  • External families ARE for multiple instances
  • Build a good library!  Time spent building intelligent families is much more time spent later.
  • Use these for generic conditions or often-used specific conditions.
  • Search online first for a family that at least closely resembles what you want before you spend alot of time building your own.  Often editing somebody else’s work is much easier.
  • Keep in mind your scheduling, and rendering needs down the road. PLAN AHEAD!

In regards to what it look likes, it seems as though you have an underlay on. Go to view properties and you should see underlay, and check to see it is set to none.
