I need help on this one...

Point out anything weird you see...

We have sent our model (copy of the central file) to the structural engineer.  He makes his structural model and sends it to us (a copy of his central file).

1. We get a copy of his central file, that shoots warnings about not being able to connect to the network, etc... (is this normal?)

2. His central file has our model linked in, so it warns us that the linked file couldn't be found (should he unload our model before sending it to us?)

3. His model is aligned in the x-y axis but is off on the z axis by a few floors. (the underground garage structure is on level 4).  I could manually pull the model down and align it, every time he sends us an updated model... but I don't think this is a good idea.

4. the idea is to delete any structural element in our model after the structural model is in place. (this has not happened yet)

Now, I have read there is a way to "publish" coordinates and share them, so this linking goes seamlessly.  How is this process? please point out if we screwed up anywhere in the process?

Other question, is there a way of "sharing" your model without giving all the sheets, views, schedules, etc..... just the model?

thanks!

I will try to answer as best I can.

1. Yes, I believe since the central files exist in two seperate locations that you will alway get the warnings when linking other workshared files in.

2. Same as above. I would suggest that the link be unloaded before attaching to your file.

3. You can either aquire the coordinates from the structural file or publish yours to it. I am not sure how you need to work but the procedure is the same. To Aquire the coordinates you will need to first link the file in and manually align it to your model. You will then go to Tools-->Shared Coordinates-->Acquire Coordinates and select the linked file. This will align your coordinates to the linked file coordinates. To publish you do a similar thing.

We are only in our first copy-monitor project so we are by no means experts on the subject but your questions indicate that both of your offices need to get together to learn and establish the processes you will be following.  This is not simple and both offices need to understand what is happening or you will have a real mess!

To answer some of your questions:

  1. When you share your files, the file should be opened with the detatch from central box checked.  Most of the time, there is no reason to open their file but you can overcome the problem by opening their file in that manner then resaving it.
  2. D.O.
  3. Your offices need to understand and coordinate project origin.
  4. Yor offices need to understnad what items are copy-monitored and what items are just linked.  Copy mointored objects reside in both files.  Linked objects reside in one but can show in both.  You need to outright own or have a copy/monitored object in order to change it or to place hosted elements on or in it.
We have decided to only share our model with shared levels and grids.  All other 2d work will not be shared.  That means we have to clean up our shared model each time we post it.
