I think I know the answer already (because it's Autodesk afterall!), but in Revit 2008, is it possible to set what the current phase should be? I am tired of constantly drawing and editing what phase something should be. I should be able to set, say,  Phase 2 to be current and everything I draw should automatically be set to that phase until I change the setting.

Our office sets up different views with different phases set up so that what ever you draw in that view goes in that phase.  then you just open up whatever plan is in the phase to draw instead of changing phases or selecting objects and putting them on different phases.

I just checked to confirm it.  If the view you are drawing in is set to "New Construction" then what you draw into it is generated as "New Construction", if the view is set as "Existing" then what you place will be generated in that phase.  Demolition is a little tricker, as when I drew a wall in it, it was still generated as "New Construction" and didn't appear in the view at all, since that phase is turned off.  I figure that if you create more phases that the items placed will simply be generated in the phase that the view is set too.  You can set up Multiple views to start with, or as you work through the file change the phase as you work through it, and seperate it out later.  It'll likely just be a matter of preference as to which way you choose to work through it.
