I have been having this problem for the last two hours and I never found an answer online...so on my own I finally figured out the issue I was having rendering an interior space in RA2009 (it was completely black).  Mine had to do with the material set for glazing.  Change this and make sure it's not on default:  go to Settings<Materials, scroll down to "Glazing" and go to the Rendered Appearance tab.  Change the Rendered Apperance Based On setting to something that is actually transparent, i.e. Glazing.

I hope this helps a lot of others having the same issue I did!

I've seen the same problem - it's perplexing, but has been occuring with models created in older versions of Revit. Some older interior lighting components might need to be updated to 2009 ones. Select the compent, get it's Properties, and then click Load. Find the same component in your 2009 Imperial Library, and load it in. Allow it to replace the existing one. That seemed to work with downlights, anyway.

Another problem I've been having after upgrading is that Revit forgot that the "glass" material's render appearance assignment. It makes all the windows gray, so no light come in...

If anyone knows a quick fix for these lighting annoyances, I'd love to hear about it!

My Solution:

I set up a camera on level 1, but lowered my view below level one [I was trying to render a scene from a lower level, level 0 we will call it].  I think the rendering was black because it throught I was in the ground, but I had actually created a floor that was 15" lower than level one.  I went back to level 0 floor plan pulled a camera from the same angle and everything worked perfectly.

All I had to do was un-bury myself.

I had a simmilar problem with a rendering and as strange as this sounds the problem ended up being the type of tree I had in the model (Red Ash). When I removed or changed the tree the problem was solved.

It's an "Interior" Render with "Sun only", did you have any light in there? Did you active "Portal Daylights"?

That image says sun only!!!!!!

You have to turn on your lights and they can't be hidden by a ceiling.

Perhaps you should post the view before you render so we can see what you have.

This is an exterior view so you should be using EXTIEROR Sun not interior
