Is there a way to modify the 'recent files' page. Say, to have smaller, but more icons, or not to show this page at all, or to adjust it to fit the screen?

I believe its set to show just 4 in each category. Maybe add it to the wishlist page and contact Autodesk about being able to customize the recent files window in future versions.
