well the O.P. asked for a "high end pc" so I think its within range.  but the real reason for 64bit system is for a faster system.  secondary is the ability to address more memory.  thirdary is the driver headaches with xp64.  but thats my favorite part.

Actually that set-up shows two sets of two for 4GB total. I intended two sets of two sticks of 2GB each for 8GB total. If someone needs a more reasonably priced set-up, I actually just built a PC for home that runs Revit pretty well.

Thermaltake VE2000BWS Armor LCS Full Tower Case w/Liquid Cooling System

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 2.50 GHz 1333 MHz 775 6MB Desktop Processor

Patriot PVS24G6400LLK 4GB (DDR2-800) DDR2 Memory

OCZ OCZ2RPR800C44GK 4GB (DDR2-800) DDR2 Memory

(2) Palit NE/880TSXT302 Geforce 8800 GT Sonic 1GB GDDR3 PCI-e 2.0 Video Card

EVGA 123-YW-E175-A1 nVidia nForce 750i SLI Socket 775 1333 MHz ATX Motherboard

SAMSUNG SH-S223Q 22X SATA DVD Burner Black Drive

Western Digital Caviar SE 16 WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s

AEROCOOL FP-01 55-in-one Card Reader Retail

Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit edition

Was targetting $1500 and got pretty close (assuming a 50% success rate on rebates). With the liquid cooling and the MB I got, I'll be overclocking the processor, but haven't tried it yet. The Aerocool is a system monitor too that tracks and controls 3 temperatures and 3 fan speeds. I wired up the liquid cooling pump as a "fan" so that I get the alarm if it goes out. Must say rendering walk-throughs in Revit loves having 8GB RAM and 2GB of video.

not sure i could cut enough of the other pieces out to bring it back to a $1500 system if I'm starting out with $6000 worth of graphics from the get go. I do like that there's a number 2 in front of that graphics card in my home system. running SLI cards of 1GB EACH (albeit an 8800 series) is a big step up from my previous system....even if it can't touch the fx5600's.

...would be fun though to revisit the ol' shopping cart system with the fx5600's and up-dated everything else.

You can get the 5500 from TigerDirect for $2k.... but that's pretty stupid unless your like a freaking Hollywood blockbuster movie CGI Guru.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3529069&CatId=2640

This "budget" high end workstation is more than enough for BIM/Design Vis.

maybe someone can chime in here but does the new 4600 outperform the old 5500?

We are having all kinds of problems with the 4600 on DELLs using XP 64bit. Revit just does not like it !! stay away. most obvious problem is permanently corrupting 3D views to become pseudo-wireframe. Such view will be permanently corrupted and there is no repair. Make a new 3D view....

hate to agree with typhoon, but i've seen that 3D-wire-frame-view-corruption a couple of times in our office and in every case it was on a 32-bit XP machine. i haven't seen it on a 64-bit machine yet, so i'm not sure 100% of the blame can be placed on your OS.

Hey "hate to agree with typhoon"??? Bauhaus1919 don't you like me? well no matter, that issue (3D-wire-frame-view-corruption) i think it's a problem from Revit not from OS, since i use VISTA 64 i can take advange of ALL RAM i have in my PC, when i work with XP 32bits and if i was in Revit 2008 making a render, i can't do anyting else because "He" crash, but now i'm doing a Render in 2009, working in Rhino, listen music and stay here in Revitcity at the same time and Revit don't crash, i think, no i'm SURE it's more quick now the renders than in XP 32bits.... Bauhaus1919 you must clarify the situation.....

lol the oceans between all of us seems to make obvious that we don't use the same sayings!  typhoon, bauhaus is just giving a friendly jab.  but i would agree that the wireframe problem has been addressed and is a universal problem.  I don't think it could be blamed on any one configuration.
