let ask if anyone out there has ran accross an issue with showing different varrations of their plans. being a semi custom home builder we offer the same plan, 40 plus homes, but will change the house pretty much any way possible. with these homes we offer 3 different elevations and various extensions that are not standard. we used to have "cutaway or partials" of the changed area and they would be in the same base plan. i am having trouble trying to figure out how best to do this in revit and keeping these options scheduled seperate from a baseplan. i could have 1 model of each elevaion which would make 3 complete models. but if i then add all 3 basement options ( meaning a plan with full basement then with 1 crawl then with 2 crawls. it becaomes very hard to manage my plans. because i now have 9 different models 3 for each elevation. if i then begin to add models for any extension to house i would have that X's the elevation model then foundaion type and so on creating a nightmare for plan up keep. i hope i didn't confuse anyone with my question. thanks for your suggestions in advance.

Have you tried using linked files?

are the files drawn as a project like any other revit project? can you then paste them in where you need them in the current project?

it's like an xref in autocad... you have a project file that you can "link" into another project file. When you upadate the linked file, you can go into the host project and update the link... this way you can link your different options in depending on what you want. Another way to do this might be through groups... I'm not sure exactly what you're trying to do but groups might work as well.

what we did in microstaiton was have them referenced in the drawing then there were turned off. then when i started a new project i would turn on the reference files that best matched the homeowners choices. once that was was done i would merge them together and start my specific project from there. so if the behave like a refernce file file they should be able to be joined to the current projecdt for ease of modify the specific project, yet remain linked for baseplan representaion. is that what you mean?

I've never used microstation so I'm not sure exactly what you mean... BUT yes, I mean that you can have a base project with everything but the options, then you add in the options by using either groups or linked project files.

i' m experimenting with the links. is it normal for the dims and room tags to not come across when it is linked. also can the link be made part of the base file so it can be modified.

Linking will not give you options like you're after, file linking is primarily intended to allow campus or site development documentation. You need to look at the new feature DESIGN OPTIONS in 6.0. Check out the tutorials...

I don't know if design options is the best way to do what you want. Unless I don't understand your question, you have multiple files and need to put certain options in more than one project. If you did use design options, you would have to have a lot of different options stored in a template file. I'm not sure how this would work with scheduling either. It might be worth a try though.

Design options was added to Revit due in part to criticism by production home builders who have models with options.
Now you can essentially do...
house type: "Catalina"
facade: option II
master suite: option A
garage: option 2.
Every view now has a design options setting and you promote the option you want to use in documentation for plotting. Naturally you need to do some planning to get everything sorted out...but this feature is for this purpose.
Linking will not let you schedule or annotate model objects in the linked files. It is unworkable for "options" in the fullest sense. It was created for site/campus planning, which is why only model objects are linked, no annotation.

I NOTICED THAT WITH LINKING THAT NOTES DID NOT COME THROUGH. I SEE WHAT YOU MEAN. I'LL TAKE A LOOK AT THE DESIGN OPTIONS NEXT. BUT WITH JUST THE QUICK CLANCE IT LOOKS AS THEROUGH YOU CAN'T JUST SHOW THE OPTIONS WITH OUT THE BASE MODEL. THE REASON I WOULD DO THIS IS TO SHOW A CUTAWAY VIEW OF THE OPTION ON A BROCHURE. ALL TO SAVE SPACE WITHOUT HAVING TO SHOW EACH MODEL ON THE BROCHURES, JUST WHAT IS CHANGING WHEN THAT OPTION IS PURCHASED. I LIKE THE WAY IT FLOWS AS FAR AS THE WAY YOU CAN TURN OPTIONS ON AND OFF TO GET THE BASE MODEL I NEED TO START MY MODIFICATIONS FROM. JUST NOT HOW TO SHOW THE OPTIONS BY THEMSELVES. BUT MORE TIME WILL TELL.

have you tried copying your option to the clipboard and pasting in a new project for the purpose of showing it alone?

WE HAVN'T REALLY SET ANY THING IN STONE AS FAR AS HOW TO SHOW OUR OPTIONS. BUT WE HAVE TRIED THAT AND IT WORKS BUT IT SEEMS TO A LITTLE MORE TIME CONSUMING. BEING ON THE RESIDENTIAL SIDE OF BUILDING OF ARCHITECTURE REVIT DOES SEEM TO FIT THE COMM. SIDE A LITTLE EASIER. BUT I DO SEE THEY ARE TRYING TO FIT US IN AND I AM PLEASED.
