I'm trying to create a Level Head Detail Component that I can use in Drafting Views.  I'm a newbie in family creation so I thought this might be a good, simple place to start.  I think I've pretty much got it figured out except the adjustable extension line.  I just can't figure out how to make the length adjustable via a grip (much like the View Title extension line).  I've tried various ref lines along with dimensions / labels.  What gives?  The extension line really only needs a grip at one end (opposite the circle).  I've attached my file.

You might want to take a look and an actual detail component family rather than the generic annotation famil. Perhaps take a look at the line based detail component template.

Well . . . seems that you can't add a label in a detail component template.  If I can't add a label, the I don't know how to have editable annotation above and below the line . . . that also scales appropriately with different scale factors.  Maybe I need to investigate the nested families thing.  Maybe I need a Detail Component Family nested inside an Annotation Family . . . or visa versa.

Any thoughts?

Sorry, I should have explained that a little better. You will want to nest annotation families into the detail component.

This will allow you to create whatever lables you want and since they are annotation they will scale correcetly.

You could also try making this as a generic model family that contains only your 2d line work and what not.

How hard do you think it would be to create a family (nested family or whatever) that acts much the way the Model based (3D) Level Head family works?  I mean, when you get ready to create a new level in an elevation view, you click the level command thing, then you pick an insertion point.  Then you can drag the level head off in either direction creating a level line along the way.  The length of the level line is grip editable.  You can choose whether or not you want the Level Head and text on the left or the right.  In the 2D version of that, I would simply have a couple of text labels to edit.  They would be intelligent labels like their 3D counterparts.  Make sense?  That would be a cool family to have for Drafting Views (2D).

I don't think it would be too difficult to create that family.

Basically you would need to have the annotations on each side of the family and have those both controlled by visibility parameters. If you look at some of the other posts on here you can learn how to make it so if you turn one side on the other turns off. As for adjusting the length by grips, a line based detail works, but you can also use a generic model with line work. If you use the detail component template, then your labels will have to be nested annotation which means to change them you might have to go through the properties rather than double click and edit. There are a lot of options that you have and you'll probably find the better you get with families, the more stuff you will want to add to them.
