i am adding details to my drawings and am in need of help with the callouts.  once a detail view has been created in the project, is there an easy way to overwrite the existing detail view with a new one once the new detail has been revised and updated.  when i insert from file, it will create a dtl-1 view instead of overwriting.  then i will have to retag all my drawings to show and connect to the dtl-1 tag or view

when you say, detail view, do you mean a detail cut section view or a drafting view? I think you are refering to drafting. view. I see that you are re-importing back something to your model. You should have linked those details to your revit model in the first place. Your options, I guess, is to retag them if not that many or make all your details in .rfa format and use Detail components to insert them in their respective drafting view.

I second the suggestion to make drafting details that can be loaded as detail components.  I thought this would be a waste of time when I started really detailing drawings because it seemed counterintuitive to draft something outside of the model and then import it.  HOWEVER, once you have a detail component, you can use it to detail all your projects, or you can at least start with that detail component and do a save as to make a new one with tweaks that customize it for your next project.  Well worth the time at the outset to do it right in Revit the first time than to try to import dwg's or anything like that.
