I have read the other threads on this subject but dont think they answer the problem i have.  I want to dimension an intersection point back to a horizontal gridline, I have attached a copy of the Grid Lines concerned, i want to dimension the point where grid line 3 intersects grid line 2 then give a horizontal dimension back to grid line 1, i have tried drawing a detail line but when i turn this off or delete it i lose the dimension, anyone any ideas on how i can get round this problem?

Hi Allan, you said "I have attached a copy of the Grid Lines concerned", where is it? the dimensions are attached to the Elements, if you delete this elements the dimensions disapears....

Hi, you can do this: create 2 Reference planes, one in the intersection of the lines 2-3 and the other at the grid one, dimension, then erase the ref plane in the grid one, then the other ref plane turn them to small just like you can't see them....

All you have to do is dimension from the vertical first and then pick the point where the other two intersect, see attached.

Is there a reason behind doing this? It seems like more work than its worth.

Yeah NKRAMER, in revit 2009 it's simple, but if you use 2008?

Interesting. Havent had to use that until recently so it hadnt affected me. Must have been one of the behindthe sceens improvements when they allowd you to split grid lines.

Just a reminder in Revit the dimension is linked to the element (unlike a lot of other documentation software), so if one of the elements is removed you lose the witness line also as it loses its reference.

If you are in fact using 2008, (I suggest upgrading if you can), then dimension to reference planes and simply set in your print settings to not print reference planes... This will not stop them exporting in DWG's however...
