I'm not familiar with Revit's capabilities so would appreciate anyone's opinion on this. I'm looking for a way to generate fairly simple buildings quickly for large planning projects like this one I worked on recently. I normally receive a .dwg with closed polyline building footprints, which I bring into max and extrude and texture map. I'd really like to push this a bit further, it works well at a distance but not close up. I've got my eye on this pretty amazing program, CityEngine, but we have a few unused Revit licenses in our office and wondered if I could use one of them to achieve a similar result.

Could I create a building (from a closed polyline) with a very simple facade system, then apply the same steps to another footprint? Does Revit allow some sort of scripting like this? The models wouldn't need interiors and don't need to be "smart". If I can clarify my question let me know, cheers.

You can use the massing in revit and very easily apply wall types, roof systems and what not to the masses, but I'm not sure that you will be able to achieve what City Engine can as fast as it can. City Engine is designed to handle large scale cities rather easily where as Revit might start to bog with that many mass objects plus City Engine has a built in scripting tool to aid with building editing.

OK, thanks Brett, that's pretty much what I thought.
