We have sort of an emergency here at the office.  We've got three different people working from the same central file.  One of my co-workers accidentally deleted the site plan (a linked cad file), and then saved to central.  So we've got one local copy and the central file that are messed up, but two users with local files that still have the correct site.  I thought about taking one of the local files with the site plan still in it and making it the central file, but we don't really want to do this because then we'll lose all the changes everyone has made since that particular user last saved to central.  What we're about to do is just re-attach the site plan in the same location, but this will mean a lot of work going into the various views where the site plan appears (and there are a lot) and re-setting the visibility graphics.  Which is so frustrating, because I can see the site plan in my local file!  It's right there!  Can I do something to override the deletion of the item in the central file?  Please help!!!

I think your already aware of the only two options there are (that I know of).  new central or re-do.

Undo doesn't work for all commands. I think this is one of them.

lunchtrayrider is right, new central or redo are your best options here.

I would go with the new central file from the most recent local. There shouldn't be that much of a loss if the drafters are saving in a timely fashion.

You could also try rolling back your central file by running the backup command from the file menu but I do suggest this as a last resort only.

thanks for all your suggestions.  we talked it over with the project team and finally ended up just re-attaching the site plan.  so frustrating!

Not sure if this would help (would have helped?) in your case but here's what we did when something similar happened in my office,

I took the most current local copy that still had the lost entities, then:

1. Opened a new, blank project in the same Revit session.

2. Went to the original project, copied all entities I was trying to recover to the clip board.

3. Saved as a temporary RVT file to a network-accessible folder.

4. Went to the local copy that was most current except for the accidentally-deleted entities.

5. Open the temporary RVT file created in #3

6. Copied/pasted the entities from that file into the local copy of the actual project. All view settings should still be the same. Did an STC and had everybody do an RL.

Obviously this might be a little late, but here is what I have done when presented with the same situation:  I went to File->Show History and looked for where the guilty party saved... the I went to File->Backups chose the central file, and looked to see how many backups had been created after the guilty part had saved.  I then rolled back the project to the last save before the guilty person's last save to central.  As long as nobody else has saved to central since (which is how it sounded you had the situation) then only the guilty member loses their work, as their local file is rendered incompatible with the central file...  Hope this helps this time, or next time...

tabest, your solution sounds interesting.  (we already decided to do a re-do, but, as you said, for next time.)  are you rolling back the central file?  I'm sort of a noob, so I'm always scared to do anything too crazy to the central file.  will rolling it back not make the central file incompatible with everyone's local file?

Every time you save to your central file, a backup copy is created...  so if user A saves, and then user B saves some messed up changes, you can roll back to user A's save, User A & C and all the others have local files that are still compatable, but user B loses their changes, & their local file is incompatible.  You are also able to roll back on your local file too, but this loses compatiblity whith central file if you roll back to a point further back than a save to central... and this only effects the local user...  One more thing, don't be afraid of Revit's crazy features, figure out how things work, I typically use a simple test file, create a wall, save, create a door save, have another user create a wall and save, etc.  Then roll back to see what happens...  Usually on the small projects, you can perform a similar action much faster.  But don't take my word for what occurs, try it out, make sure that you understand it from having done it, not having read about it...

thanks tabest, I'll give that a try the next time something like this happens.  (and with everyone in our office being a new user, it inevitably will...)

I realize I'm about 2 years too late on this post, but here is the solution for anyone else who has made this mistake. I'm not sure how this solution works in other versions, but I am using Revit 2011.

1) Create a new floor plan (I did this via putting in an new elevation above the height of the building)

2) Go to the new floor plan and in the view properties and click on the "Edit..." button for "View Range"

3) In all the pull-down menus set the ranges to "unlimited"

And VOILA, site plan!!  Good Luck Smile

Symptom: After deleting levels from a project, the site view no longer exists.

Issue:  site view deleted.

Solution: Create a site view as follows:

  1. Click View tabCreate panelPlan Views drop-down CryingFloor Plan).
  2. In the New Plan dialog, clear Do not duplicate existing views.
  3. Under Floor Plan views, select the level on which to base the site view.
  4. Click OK.
  5. In the Project Browser, rename the newly created floor plan view to Site.
  6. Open the Site view.
  7. Click View tabGraphics panelView Templates drop-down CryingApply Template Properties to Current View).
  8. In the Apply View Template dialog, under View Templates, select Site Plan.
  9. Under View Properties, change any view properties as desired for the site view.
  10. Click OK.
