is there a way i can view the materials in the normal 3d mode rather than having to render it to see it every time? i know u can do it in autocad so im hoping theres a way to do it here too

If you set your 3D view to "shaded" or "shaded with edges" you will see an approximation of the colors that will show up in the rendering.

You can use Settings/Materials to control how objects look in regular views, 3D views, and rendered views. By controlling each of the values you can have patterns and colors more or less coordinated among the different view types. There is a limit, of course, when you have a material for which there is a good surface pattern but you can't find a rendering pattern for that material. Spanish roof tile comes to mind here.

When i'm doing renderings i'll usually do a small region raytrace on the particular material i'm working on to trial and error the look... That way i only have to wait about 10 seconds to get an indication of what the material is going to render like.
