I am updating the materials library at the moment to redefine materials maps per Mental Ray, but I cannot see a way to map an existing “render Appearance” material setting to an existing material – that is an utterly ridiculous oversight. It would seem at fist that you can – via “Render Material Based on…..“replace” “ at the top of the dialogue – but that only allows for Mental ray – presets! What if my libary is not based on Mental Ray materials or even Revit preset material list!?Dahhh!Also............It would seem as though a material properties has to be taken from the Mental Ray library presets for it to be defined as on the following:Ceramic Properties Concrete Properties Generic Material Properties Glass Properties Glazing Properties Masonry/CMU Properties Metal Properties Metallic Paint Properties Mirror Properties Paint Properties Plastic/Vinyl Properties Stone Properties Water Properties Wood Properties Transparency and Translucency I can’t replicate these properties unless I use “replace” for all materials – so once a material is created it is always locked to this set of “type” properties. ie. most of my materials under Render Appearance tab are based on "Generic" & that can't be changed without rebuilding them completely from the Mental Ray PresetsSeems like they’ve made some fairly large omissions in this version of Mentral Ray! – really starting to get me down! Can anyone answer this. is there some realation between Accurender library & Mental Ray. EG - if a materials was assigned a certain "preset" category in Accurender Library does it translate better to Mental Ray?

Okay,

For starters all standard revit materials will be automatically updated to their mental ray equivalent.  You can tell which ones by checking Identity Tab - Comments.  If it was updated it would be blank if not it will say "Rendering appearance not upgraded".  Unfortunately this is the case for any non standard material.

The Mental Ray system in Revit has been setup to simplify the process of creating materials for novices as much as possible.  There is of course the risk of over simplifying to the extent where it frustrates those who are familiar with Mental Ray...

Basically you will need to go through all you materials and update/recreate them.  I've already done this process for our 2000 or so materials.  Frustrating I know, but once its done its done and you can use transfer project standards to copy materials between projects or by copying objects with those materials applied across to get individual ones.  (I know this is stupid, but apparently they are working on a better solution).

The process works by selecting the most appropriate Mental Ray pre made material from the "Asset Library".  You then manipulate this material to what you require.

You cannot currently add to the "Asset Library".

Once you've been through this process you are going to be very easily create Photo real renderings from within Revit.  I posted one in the beta forums that had some great response, but unfortunately I am unable to post here as it is under NDA.  Trust me when I say its definitely worth the hassle.

So, let me get this straight....  the only way to save and reuse a material in 2009, is to set up a template file with all the materials in it, and transfer the project standards into your current project, or to copy an object from a previous project that already has the material????   This seems very stupid!

I am also not happy about the lack of background options.  Please tell me these are being fixed ASAP!  I would also like some procedure map options, similar to 'tile' in 3d max/viz, and a displacement option for realistic grass (or hair)...  if not, I am still forced to use Viz or Max.
