have been using various family items and putting them in my projects from this site, however there are certain items i can not find and end up searching the net to find what i am looking for. what is the best way to create my own and how? can i use autodesk inventor or solidworks to create my 3d image and import that image to revit? do i save the item as a block? what is best method and what is best file type to use?

It's best to build your 3d families from REVIT elements if you can.  Learn how to use the solids and voids and you can do most items you want to model 3D.  Remember though that 2D families that use symbollic lines for plan and elevations take up less memory and are usually adequate for most architectural needs ... except when you need a 3D image.

When a true 3D component is available in other formats (dwg), you can create a family using that as well.
