Look in your help under fill ...

then at the bottom "custom pattern files".

I looked up the .pat files, and the choices were very very limited.

At the very lieast, I would need the roman or spanish tile and rough stone walls.

Can these be found anywhere else? Can a user edit his own patterns?

Yes, you can edit your own patterns, but it isn't simple.  Easier to bring in a CAD hatch and hope it works... if you want to edit your own, do a search on your computer for *.pat, open the file Revit.pat, and it gives you directions and examples in there.  Good Luck, I've made several patterns myself, and they are a pain (my opinion of course).

All of the AutoCAD pat files are usable.

Here is a clay tile. Traditional Spanish. Known as Roman in French.

I edited it in another environment, because no one seems to have it.

It reads into Revit, but it doesn't seem to want to rotate with the view.

Could someone please give me a pointer as to what's going on?

I have tried to check the 'orient with element' box.

Is there a decent shareware pattern editor out there?

Editing the .txt file with notepad takes a lot of trail and error.

'Patchkit test' stamps a watermark on the pattern it saves.

For very occasional use, the price is rather stiff.
