Ok, I have read all the previous postings on how to make curved roofs and I've tried all the solutions and none have seemed to work. The footprint of my building looks like a rhombus except the 2 slanted sides are curved instead of straight. So what I want is to make a curved roof (U-shaped or concave up) in elevation view that has the boundry lines of the building. I have successfully made a roof by extrusion that has the curve that I want only it extends beyond the footprint of the building. So I tried using the "cut plan profile" button and I get an error saying "The roof couldn't be cut." I've also tried to make a massing geometry outside the boundry and use the cut geometry button but that won't work either. I have tried making a roof by footprint and then editing the slope but that only gets me a V shaped roof instead of a smooth curve. I have tried to create a roof from face with the massing toolbar. A mass would actually work perfectly if I could edit the profile and extrude it back but every diffent type of mass I've tried (solid, void, blend, sweep, extrusion, and revolve) won't let me sketch in the elevation view. I hope what I've done all makes sense. I have spent several hours trying to make this roof and it's very frustrating as this project for school (I'm a junior in architecture at the U of I) is due on Wednesday. Any suggestions that anyone has would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The first file is the footprint of my building, which I want to also be the boundary of my roof. The second file is the shape of the roof I want in elevation view.

Hey mryland21, The roof you are looking for is pretty simple to do. The reason the cut plan profile won't work is because your roof by extrusion profile has the two vertical ends on it and Revit doesn't know how to handle that. To achieve what you are looking for I would create the roof using the ROOF BY EXTRUSION command and then to create the cuts go into a plan view and using the CREATE command form the modeling bar I would create a GENERIC MODEL. It has to be a generic model as nothing should be used to create a void element to interact with a solid piece of geometry that is not a mass. Once you create the void, use the cut geometry and finish the family. See the example I made. P.S. you might want to be a little cleaner at your edges than I was. http://screencast.com/t/2ZXAEQVD

I wanted to say one more thing about this. Keep in mind that when you create a void to interact with solid geometry that it is more a less a 3d wipeout. It doesn't actually remove the material that it is in contact with like the subtract command from AutoCAD; it just hides it from your view. This is nice to know because as you make changes to your model you might have to move / modify the solid being cut and you might get weird results. If this happens, just edit the void and modify it to fit your new changes. HTH

Still not sure what you want ... is the attached what you are after? If so, this is a created in-place roof by using a sweep with voids. Just do a straight sweep with your profile then add the voids before you finish the family. ...ooops - looks like I was looking at an out-dated post and Brett has already answered you.
