i am working with revit architecture and would like to know if contour lines can be made to show at different intervals in plan, and whether it is possible to customize to show major and minor contours?

yes and yes, controlled within settings->site settings. You can also control color, line weights, etc from visibility graphics/ overrides ->topogography
