for artwork do a search on Decal or Decal Tool. you should find plenty of answers

The paint tool will paint the whole wall.... even if the wall extends into other rooms. If you don't want that, you can split the wall at wall junctions. If you wnat to seperate a wall into mutiple areas or have designs on it, you can use the split face tool to define those areas and paint them differently.

 

BTW, the "Paint" tool can be colors and textures but does not show up in any quantities or schedules. If you paint with 3d bitmaps, it will render accordingly. You can paint the wall as "brick" and if you don't like that, you can paint the wall again as something else.
