I have looked up the Forum postings on Decals, and followed the Revit Architecture 2008 User's Guide to the letter; BUT, it's all kind of useless because stupid me can't get past the first step. 

If I open a 3D view the Decal option on my Modelling menu is grayed out and I can't select it.  I can select it if I'm in a 2D (plan) view; but, then I can't place the Decal on a vertical surface, and if I try to place it on the floor (like a carpet pattern, for instance) it is hovering in the air somewhere above the ground plane.

 Can someone please help me get past step one and tell me how I can have a 3D view open and select Decal from the Modelling tab?  After that, I can probably figure out the rest.  Thanks!!

Have you got generic models turned on in VG?

Open your model 3d view - not a perspective 3d view.
