This is from Mr.Spot's site:

1. Simply create your model text as you would normally and set the plane so the text is embedded on the face of the wall or system family that you want to engrave the text on.
2. Use your join geometry tool on the wall and the model text - This makes Revit cutout the model text from the wall.
3. Now just set the material of your model text to have a 100% transparency...

Coreed,

Have you tried this method. If I select the text to be joined then the wall is not selectable.  ???

Hi once more,

I'll revise my earlier comment. I can create a Model Text Void in a wall in a project, but not in a family. I'm trying to create stenciled signage and if i can make this method work in a family rather than a wall it will mean a lot less work.

But up to now I cant seem to join Model Text to any other 3D object within a Family.

from what i understand it will work with elements defined as Generic models also. i have only used it to engrave in walls.
