When creating floors I am confused on which tool to use.  For example, what is the difference between Modelling>Floor and Structural>Slab functions?  When creating slab on grade, is it best to use Structural>Foundation>Slab or Modelling>Floor?  What are the pros and cons of these tools and what are the best practices?

Hey mattmols,

As far as looks go the slabs are exactly the same. The difference comes more into play on the analytical side of things.

For example:

The Foundation > Slab type has three more foundation-specific values than a regular slab. These additional values are: Width, Length, and Elevation at Bottom. These values allow an analysis tool to distinguish between a standard slab and a foundation slab.

It also has a structural usage parameter that will allow you to specify wether it is slab on garde or foundation where as the slab just says slab.

Hence a foundation slab should be used to model a slab on grade which does not require support from other additional elements. You also can't cut an opening through a foundation slab unless you draw it in the sketch but it will easily accept your slab edges.

The slab command will allow you to cut openings for stairwell, shafts and what not, but can be a bit troublesome if you try adding a slab edge. This is ment more for your upper floors and does require the support of other elements.

HTH,

Brett
