On the family I'm creating, a=b="parameter 1".  I tried entering in "parameter 2"=sqrt(2*"parameter 1"^2), but it says "Improper use of boolean expressions."  What am I doing wrong?

I found my problem.  I was creating one of the parameters as a text parameter rather than a length parameter.
