Ok ladies and gents, I'm trying to get the whole ref. plane thing down and have wasted, well, a whole paycheck worth of time and achieved nothing.

Now, I'm new and the Revit Essentials training I rec'd was ok.  I'm trying to place a header over an opening that does not sit on a level line.  I've used 3d snapping in that view, tried to place it in elevation and in plan view but it doesn't show up due to v. range setting which I have cut thru to see the opening only.  So I know I wont see the header but at this point I just want to place it over the opening on not in the sky!  Sorry.

Is there a tutorial, insight or anything that someones come across that may help?  I still have 90day support from ideate for the essentials but I'm still waiting.  Anyone?  I'm drowning over here.

You can draw the wall in plan and before you start drawing, click on the properties button and set the base offset height to the elevation you want for the bottomo of the soffit.  Then set the height of the wall.  Maybe it extends up to a level or maybe it is unconnectd and you just enter in a height.  If the base height is above the cut plane, you will not see it when you draw the wall.  If you would like to see it while you draw, you can set the base height to something like 2 feet and then when you are finished drawing the wall, right-click on the wall and go to properties and change it to a base offset of 9'.

Are you talking about using a beam from the Structural toolbar to draw a header?  If so, I've found those very frusterating to use.  I found that if you change one of the end-point elevations, it will then let you align it like any other element.  I'm currently working on a project in which I had to draw all the existing structural components, many of which are on an angle.  I started by placing it roughly where it would go, cutting a section parallel to it so I could align it with the slope of the roof, align it laterally, and then stretch the ends to ref planes.  I also had to create a couple of new plan views in which I changed the view range to be able to see what I was working on.

Now, just in case you're talking about creating an opening in a wall without actually placing some sort of door, you can create an elevation view to view the wall and use the Opening tool on the Modeling toolbar, or use Edit Profile on the top Element toolbar.

Hope I've helped.
