Here's a doozy... I need to make stairs that follow the exterior of a conical (tapered) circular tower.  The base interior radius is 5.5' and the top interior radius is 4'.  The stairs need to be 3' wide.  My guess is that I will have to make an in-place model, as I don't think this is possible as a 'stair' model component. Either way, it seems like a huge pain in the rear. (RAC 200Shadey

 Any ideas?

Should not be a problem  - I just modeled one that uses a series of tagent curves to approximate a spiral.

You can do it one tread or more.  It's up to you.  It partly depends on if you want the same distace between each tread at the minimum side or if you want the treads spaced equal angle radially.  Th easy one is equal angle.  Just array some guide lines then use those along with a correct spiral.
